Carwyn Gravell, partner at Lemos&Crane, visits the Acorn Award-winning Enchanted Woodland on the Temple Hill estate in Dartford, Kent.
What was once the site of a small pox cemetery, and more recently a fly-tipping hotspot, has been transformed over the last five years by Hyde and Moat Housing into a woodland enjoyed by local people for peaceful walks and by schools for Forest Schools programmes, giving children the chance to experience learning in a new and imaginative environment. The site is now owned, managed and enhanced by a charity Temple Hill Trust.
The Trust used the Acorn Awards prize money of £1,000 to create a natural amphitheatre for residents to enjoy music, plays and story times. The creation happened at a celebratory event with help from volunteers, community rangers and staff from Hyde and Moat.
Debbie Fryer, Project Manager for the Temple Hill Trust said “It’s amazing to see another vision coming true right in front of my eyes. Winning the Acorn Awards and the donation from Waitrose helped spur us on – and with help from all the volunteers we have made a dream come true”.
