Book Clubs
I have initiated a Book Club in my secondary school library. I am hoping that someone out there who runs a Book Club can give me any tips for a successful club and also how do I get the teaching staff on board?

Re: Book ClubsI run a very successful staff book club at my secondary school. The best way to get staff on board is to offer cake at meetings!!! I also vary the books we read and sometimes have a 'theme' rather than a specific book. Lots of shameless self-promotion, networking and group emails too.We sometimes have a cinema trip to tie-in with a book we've read. I was amazed at how successful it's been with both teaching and non-teaching staff. Many staff can't make it to the meetings but join in with the reading and are 'virtual' members!!! The hardest thing is finding a time-slot that suits most people so I try to vary it. We meet once a half-term. Good Luck!!!

Re: Book Clubs
I run a small book club with yr 9-13, they come for biscuits and discussion but we don't all talk about the same book. We discuss books that then earn a 'this is a good book' sticker for the library or 'This is a very good book', So there is a pool of books which we are reading at the same time. We have thought about a single book but the speed of reading, the reading ability, subject interest etc. would make it difficult to choose a single book for them all to read. We sometimes have a balloon debate (with book characters) which is very popular or end the term with a chocolate hunt in the library. We also enter the 'Pimp my Bookcart' competition run by Unshelved The ones that come are very keen and often offer suggestions for new books in the library, we used to have a few staff who came but they have moved away and attempts to lure others have not worked so far, the mix of years is also good as the older ones remember the good books they read in the earlier years and encourage the younger ones. Hope that helps,
