Context
There have been many accounts in the UK of police officers freeing workers from situations where they are unpaid for being forced to work long hours, threatened with violence, held against their will. This form of labour exploitation includes hard labour such as paving, agriculture and cleaning. Studies suggest that thousands of individuals are working as forced labourers in the UK. Many of the workers are from Eastern Europe and other countries. Significant proportions, however, are British nationals. This phenomenon is now commonly referred to as modern slavery.
