Conference review: Empowering homeless people to make resilient and lasting life changes

Jeremy Spafford, Arts at the Old Fire StationOn 20th May, Lemos&Crane held a conference entitled ‘Empowering homeless people to make resilient and lasting life changes’ at Inmarsat Conference Centre.

The conference highlighted the importance of acknowledging people’s past and aimed to promote an approach that focuses on establishing resilience through creating fuller, richer and healthier lives for people experiencing homelessness. To illustrate that, different angles were taken from speakers working around health and well-being, nature and gardening, trafficking and labour exploitation as well as the arts.

Many of our delegates told us they took a lot of inspiration from the speakers, which they look forward to bringing into their everyday working lives. The conference provided a great platform to exchange views and advice on previously unresolved issues and obstacles, i.e. when homeless people are being denied their right of accessing health services. Delegates also emphasised the great networking opportunities on the day.

For those who have found a particular interest in the subject of homelessness and health and well-being, we would like to draw your attention to the conference ‘Beyond Crisis 2015 – Managing long-term health conditions while homeless’, run by the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The conference was rounded off by an immersive performance of David Phelops, Leader of More Than Just a Choir, who invited delegates to experience the transformative powers of the arts by singing with him.

We would like to thank all delegates for their attendance and look forward to our next conference!
