Intoart at the V&A

Intoart is an artist-led visual arts organisation working with people with learning disabilities. Artists from Intoart have recently been working with the V&A museum to produce six tours exploring the V&A collections. The artists developed their ideas over a period of six months, with numerous visits to the museum to explore the galleries and choose their objects. The tours are each made up of six drawings, each based on an object from the collection, and cover the British, China, Glass and Ironwork galleries as well as Knights and Creatures and the V&A building itself.  The tours include artists’ descriptions of why they chose certain objects and some questions to consider when looking at each object or view of the building.

At a launch event in February the Intoart artists - Andre Williams, Christian Ovonlen, Clifton Wright, Philomena Powell, Lisa Trim and Selina Helene – conducted their tours around the museum; showing visitors their objects and discussing their inspiration and method for each piece. The tours offer a different perspective on the museum’s collections, and – as with all art – an insight into the artist themselves.

The six Intoart tours can be downloaded here.

The partnership between Intoart and the V&A is an excellent example of how museum collections can be opened up to people with learning disabilities and, in turn, how artists with learning disabilities can provide a new perspective on the collections for visitors.
