An individual’s personal identity is how they define themselves, their relationships with others and their role in the world. It includes a person's perceptions of their abilities and weaknesses, needs and wants and how they expect others to view and treat them. Personal identity is often inextricably linked to self-esteem. Having a positive personal identity – recognising yourself as someone of value – is the foundation for healthy and rewarding relationships with others, emotional resilience and long-term well-being. Positive personal identity can also diminish the effects of negative stigma and destructive labels.
